Background
YHES HOUSE BACKGROUND
In response to a shared recognition that the health needs of vulnerable young people were not being addressed on the Gold Coast, three organisations (The Family Planning Association, GC Drug Council and the GC Project for Homeless Youth) successfully applied for funding from the Youth Health Policy Unit of Q Health to establish a youth health service. As a result, YHES House has been operating in Southport since 1994.
The Service initially commenced operation from Bannister House in Southport and since has operated from the following locations.
- 1994 moved to Marshall Lane Southport.
- Early 1996, relocated to 101 Nerang Street, Southport, opposite the GC hospital. (Building was sold)
- November 2002 moved to larger premises at 12 High Street, located at the side of the GC hospital. (Building was sold)
- January 2006 moved to smaller premises in 11 Hicks Street Southport. This was also a catalyst for the organisation to seek permanent premises with the implementation of a building project.
In 1999, in conjunction with CARE (Community-based Assistance Resourcing and Education) and as a part of a Crime Prevention Initiative, the unique and positive work of YHES House was recognised with additional government funding for a Young Parents Support Program. In 2006-2007, as a community partner in the Northern Gold Coast Communities for Children Initiative, the organisation provided an outreach Young Parents Program at Coomera.
