BROOKE
I have recently completed my third year of a Bachelor of Social Work degree through Central Queensland University, and since July have been undertaking the practical component of the course at YHES House.
Throughout my 14 week placement at YHES House, I have been given the opportunity to experience many things that have caused me to learn, grow and change, both personally and professionally. Overall my placement has been an eye-opening experience and has given me greater insight into the issues that young people on the Gold Coast are currently dealing with. I have learnt a great deal about the nature of young people and realise that they are extremely unpredictable. I really loved the fact that no two days were ever the same, which made the job exciting and definitely never monotonous.
During my placement I have been fortunate enough to experience all areas of the organisation including working alongside Faye, assisting with individual support and the running of groups with Tamsyn, working closely with the young parents and childbirth education groups. I also enjoyed my visit to Coomera to experience the different atmosphere and see the great work Helene is doing with the Outreach Program.
I have realised to work at YHES House it takes certain people who are passionate about changing lives of young people and making a difference. Sometimes it can seem like you are making little progress but it is the small things that keep you going.
It is about looking outside of yourself and giving something (like your time) to young people who are going through challenging times in their lives. YHES house is a small community organisation, endeavouring to do a very big job. The service is held in high regard and plays a significant role in meeting the needs of vulnerable young people on the Gold Coast.
